Chesterfield is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States, and a western suburb of St. Louis. The city of Chesterfield was incorporated in 1988. The history of Chesterfield began with European settlement in the late 1600s. The area was originally inhabited by the Mississippian Culture Indians known as the “Missouri River Mound Builders”. Try this out.
One of their largest settlements was at what is now Portage Des Sioux, Missouri. By the early 1700s, the French explorer/trader LaSalle claimed ownership of all territory west of the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. He named the area “Louisiana” in honor of King Louis XIV.
The Spanish gained control of Louisiana from the French in 1762 and kept it until 1800 when Napoleon Bonaparte sold it to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the area in 1804 on their way west. In 1808, the US built Fort Bellefontaine in present-day Nebraska Territory near St. Louis as its first government installation west of the Mississippi River.
