St. Louis City Museum
The City Museum, one of the unique museums in the United States, is a unique destination for visitors of all ages. The museum was built in the former International Shoe Company and features an eclectic collection of objects. The museum was opened in 1997 and is the brainchild of internationally known artist Bob Cassilly. Over 20 artisans work to build the museum’s various exhibits. The museum has roots that are deeper in the urban community than any other museum in the city.
The museum has many gift shops, including an Artifact shop where you can purchase surplus museum artifacts and artisan shoelaces. Be prepared for physical activity, as the museum requires visitors to move around. Visitors should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.
Missouri Botanical Garden
The Missouri Botanical Garden is a botanical garden located in St. Louis, Missouri. It is located at 4344 Shaw Boulevard and was founded by Henry Shaw. National Museum of Transportation
The National Museum of Transportation in Frontenac, Missouri is dedicated to the preservation of the history of the railroad. It was founded in 1948 as a nonprofit educational organization. The museum was built on land that was once part of the Missouri Pacific Railroad’s right of way. The Missouri Pacific Railroad was one of the first railroads to go west of the Mississippi River. Its line was single-track and included two tunnels. In order to get around the tunnels, the railroad’s line was moved approximately 1,000 yards to the west. The tunnels were then filled with rocks and soil that were removed from the right of way.
The Transportation Museum has over 300 pieces of memorabilia on display. Exhibits include passenger and freight trains, automobiles, streetcars, buses, and airplanes. The museum also has a special children’s area called Creation Station. This area has an interactive area that allows younger children to learn more about different modes of transportation.
